The late 1960s gave us Neil Young. The 80s saw the rise of Paul Young. The Noughties then chipped in with Will Young. Renowned music producer, Youth, turns sixty next year. How time flies. Fear not, dear reader, because Dublin-founded and London-based trio, whenyoung are here to bring fresh vigour to the picture. Age certainly has not wearied them so far, on the evidence of their performance at Rough Trade.
Led by singer, Aoife Power, they bristled with emotive charge. It’s hard to get past her surname without remarking on the lyrical and emotional intensity that comes from her central presence. Live, how that power was channelled and controlled really comes across. In the intimate space of Rough Trade’s Live Room, when they sang, “Closer, closer,” on ‘Never Let Go’, we felt the immediacy even further. Whether you’re still in the bloom of youth, or in the list of aging Youngs above, whenyoung are an invigorating force, capturing what it feels like to seek your way through this curious thing called life.
