What has been done tonight can’t be underestimated. You’ve not only bought The Cube, you have ensured that, no matter what goes on around it, there will ALWAYS be an arts centre on Dove Street South, Bristol. You’re all bloody brilliant.
These were the ecstatic words of the group behind The Cube Microplex last night as they finally reached their ‘Let’s All Buy The Cube’ fundraising goal. The internet lit up around 10pm when they announced simply “We’ve only gone and bloody done it!”.
With this escape from paying rent to a private landlord it’s their hope that the hard work carried out by volunteers will now be directly invested in the building, equipment, programming, creative projects and education for the staff as a whole. There are also plans for better access for those with restricted mobility, a larger bar-lounge area, improved toilets, restored cinema seats and a residency space for visiting artists – most of which will require significant work.
Of the massive £185k total, an astounding £55k was raised through public donations alone. The remainder came by way of Arts Council England, The David Family Foundation and The Cube’s own painstakingly accrued funds.
What a day for independent Bristol – we’ll leave you with these words.
yep, just shed a few tears of happiness. it’s true, you are all bloody brilliant. http://t.co/YlHzDfDWD1
