We caught up with the Brighton-based five piece, MarthaGunn, to find out a little more about them ahead of their string of headline shows this spring, including at Bristol’s The Louisiana.

Made up of Abi, Max, Humphrey, Ally and Frankie – MarthaGunn first bonded five years ago where they moved in together. Taking musical cues from bands including Fleetwood Mac, Mystery Jets and Haim, the group have since gone onto perform at The Great Escape and have also supported British-duo Bear’s Den. Over the last 18 months, the band have been honing the live show and are positioned for an exciting 2019. They will do a small headline run this spring, before playing Citadel Festival this July.

This month, the Brighton five-piece released their debut single, ‘Saint Cecilia’, paving the way for the arrival of their debut EP.

We caught up with the band to find out a little more about them ahead of their string of headline shows this spring across London, Bristol and Manchester.

Three words to describe our/my music
Direct, Emotive, Human

Last photo on your phone…
The last photo on my phone is a screen shot of a podcast I like so I could send it to a friend. We all really like Song Exploder and an artist I like, Sharon Van Etten just did an episode on her song seventeen. If you are interested in hearing how songs were created/written it’s well worth a listen.

Favourite instagram account…
Lizzo. I love her attitude to life and how she respects her self-worth. She’s hilariously funny and talented. She can play the flute like no one’s business.

The best venue I’ve played…
Haldern Pop Bar, hands down. A little while ago we played a tiny bar in Haldern, Germany. It’s owned by the same guy who runs Haldern pop festival. It was packed with people who absolutely adore music. It only really fits about 100 people packed tightly. Everyone from the town gathers there on a Friday night to hear live music. It is truly special.

Earliest song you remember…
Elton John – Candle in the Wind. I have a strong memory of being very small and pretending I was playing it on my Nans coffee table.

The worst job I’ve ever had…
Humph used to hold a sign outside in the winter, £30 for 8 hours.

Favourite food on tour…
Good vegan food. There’s a place in Bristol called Cafe Kino, they are great. No doubt we’ll stop by when we play the Louisiana in a month.

My Favourite word…
Troxfacious …it’s not real, I made it up.

Things that cheer me up…
Bubble baths, disco music, having all of our friends and family around us.

If I could play a gig anywhere it would be…
Neil de Grasse Tyson’s house, for his birthday.

I think you should listen to…
Alice Smith did a cover of a Ceelo Green song “I’m a fool” – it’s incredible
Billie Eilish – When the party’s over. It kills me (in a good way).
Prince – I would die for you. This song consumes me.

If I could see anyone play live it would be…
PRINCE. Every time.

Catch MarthaGunn live on 29th April at The Louisiana, Bristol.

‘Saint Cecelia’ is out now.
