8th November | O2 Academy

Their YOUR GIRL/YOUR GHOST international tour well underway, it’s Bristol’s turn to play host to The Decemberists‘ penchant for captivating musical storytelling, as the band return to the O2 this week.

Having regrouped earlier this year after collaborating in 2017 with UK singer/songwriter Olivia Chaney on singer Colin Meloy’s “long-lived fantasy project”, 60’s styled psych-folk ensemble Offa Rex, The Decemberists are back with their eighth studio album, I’ll Be Your Girl. Humorously bleak in places, tragically uplifting in others, the new album sees some interesting stylistic developments for the band, owing much to more synth-led songs, thanks to the influence of Grammy award-winning producer John Congleton (St Vincent/Swans/War On Drugs). It feels like a brave and experimental progression, one explored with great fervour as the band illuminate and colour this new territory with their theatrical, hyper-literate epic-pop style which fans will know and love.

Support comes from Philadelphia-raised foursome, Hop Along. Fronted by the vocally-diverse talents of Francis Quinlan and serving beautifully-crafted pop hooks together with lyrical prowess, Hop Along deliver effortlessly punchy songs filled with discerningly expressive, intimate, empathic verses. If you haven’t heard of them already, this band are well worth checking out, undergoing a major birth in 2018 with arrival of new album, Bark Your Head Off, Dog, which is sure to be a fast addition to your playlist. Welcome to your new favourite band.
