There has certainly been a rise in the appeal for psychedelic rock bands over the last couple of years, including the mighty rockers Tame Impala that stormed into higher critical acclaim with 2012’s ‘Lonerism’, and sunny electric dreamers Temples that brightened up 2013 with their debut ‘Sun Structures’. Australian band Pond are now onto their sixth album ‘Man It Feels Like Space Again’ produced by frontman of Tame Impala, Kevin Parker.
Having been released 23rd of January in Australia, it has peaked at number 15 on the Australian charts and received very positive critical acclaim in the UK from well known publications such as The Guardian, and NME. And if a serious paper like The Guardian gives five stars to an album with a song titled ‘Heroic Shart’ in there, it must be pretty damn good. It’s easy to lump Pond in with the other psych rock bands you’ve heard about, but there is no doubting the quality of the tunes. October single ‘Elvis Flaming Star’ is a rocket burst of muffled glitchy guitars, with a softer middle section of harmonic strums and plinks which could lull the hearts of the even the rowdiest crowd. Meanwhile the loopy hazed synths of ‘Zond’ drive forward through pulsating electro making for an intriguing yet entrancing listen. From the new material, you can be sure that Pond’s latest show will cause more than a few ripples.
