10th April | Thekla

Gracing the cover of this month’s magazine, North London’s Girl Ray have been going from strength to strength over the past few years, and their name has become synonymous with this particular kind of harmonious magic that they create. A band with an almost unfair amount of talent for a trio so young, their debut, Earl Grey, released on Moshi Moshi last August, marked out their distinctive sound, purveying a certain timeless quality to their music which is reminiscent of C86-era bands, whilst bearing Girl Ray’s own unique charm. The record is a shimmering collection of wistful and enchanting pop gems, filled with honeyed vocals and hazy melodies permeated with nostalgia.

Live, their tracks take on a certain noisier edge than on record, and Girl Ray sure know how to put on a good show. They last played Thekla as part of Art is Hard’s birthday bash last summer, which was an undoubtedly lively affair and having just got back from playing SXSW recently the band’s return to Bristol is eagerly anticipated. With the swooning dream-pop of Fake Laugh also joining the line-up, this show is sure to be a treat for your Tuesday night.
