June 3rd | Thekla

If ever there was a band that could pack Thekla to the rafters with sound, it’s atmospheric indie-poppers Coasts, who did just that at their homecoming gig on Saturday night. Playing to a sold-out crowd, the Bristol-born band returned to their home turf with an internationally acclaimed debut album under their belts, and bearing news that their second offering will be released this summer – much to the crowd’s delight.

Kicking off as they meant to go on, the synth-riddled ‘Modern Love’ set the bar for an extremely bouncy evening with it’s first addictive hook, quickly followed by the summery sounds of ‘Your Soul’ which wouldn’t be out of place at a sun-drenched festival. The first taste of new material came in the form of new single ‘Let Me Love You’, a slow building number with an echoing chorus and infectious dance beat appearing in bursts throughout – definitely one to impress your friends on your summer BBQ playlist.

All the big hitters from the band’s self-titled album showed their faces, including ‘Lions’, ‘You’ and ‘A Rush Of Blood’, but the first real showstopper came in the form of ‘Wash Away’, a textured soundscape that packed a punch played live and a true showcase of why the band have continued to attract so much attention with their ethereal pop sound. Almost seeming too loud and energetic for Thekla to contain them, not only did the boys have the crowd in the palm of the hand, but they also proved themselves as a slick unit, absolutely comfortable and radiant on stage.

More new tracks ‘Heart Starts Beating’ and ‘Take Me Back Home’ ramped up excitement for the next full-length album, of which many will be scrabbling to get their hands on this August no doubt, much in the same vein as their first. Sooner than we’d like it was time for wrapping up, and with none other than the anthemic debut single ‘Oceans’ a few more people fell in love by the water this weekend, as fans hoisted each other up on their shoulders and reached out to the band in glee, chanting along to every single word. As the drums beat through every chest in the room, it was a welcome home that was very well deserved.
