The team behind Boomtown Fair has joined forces with one of the city’s festival bar companies and local pub owners to offer free beer to people registering to vote this month.

The ‘Vote This Year – Get Free Beer’ campaign aims to encourage younger voters to get involved with next month’s snap election by offering them a free pint if they register to vote.

Statistics show that 18 to 24-year-olds are almost half as likely to vote as those aged 65 plus and this campaign aims to help redress the balance and get those voices heard.

Joby Andrews, from event bar specialists Refresh West which serves Glastonbury, Boomtown Fair, Shambala, Simple Things and more, had the impetus to start the campaign this week – and it is now on the clock with less than two weeks for people to register on May 22.

Andrews, who is also landlord of The Lazy Dog, The Windmill and The Pipe & Slippers in Bristol, said: “I was apathetic and not engaged when I was younger and didn’t vote as I didn’t see the point, but with what’s going on around the world and here in the UK these days it seems more important than ever.

“I’m motivated by this to try and get people, especially the young, to engage in what will massively effect their futures and register to vote.

“If they love beer as much as I did back then, a free pint will hopefully encourage them to register, so when it comes to polling day on June 8 it’ll be much easier for them to vote and make their voice heard.”

Pubs across the country are now getting on board and the word is spreading. All you have to do is go online, register to vote and then take the email you receive as confirmation in to one of the signed up bars on the website as proof. The email confirmation has to have been received since the launch of the campaign on May 8, 2017.

And before you go getting any clever pub crawl ideas, when you’ve claimed your drink you are signed off on a central system run by the campaign, so you cannot claim endless free beer.

Already registered to vote? You don’t miss out completely, there are some brilliant competitions for festival tickets on the website as well. Head to the Vote This Year, Get Free Beer website for more information.
