2nd February | Thekla
Oli Bayston or better known as his alias Boxed In returned to Bristol for a show at Thekla, accompanied by his band members Jack Benfield, Mark Nicholls and Liam Hutton. Concluding 2016 supporting Kate Tempest on tour, the group have barely taken a break as they setted off on their February tour.
Boxed In have gone from strength to strength since their free show at Start the Bus (now HY Brasil Music Club) in early 2016 which saw them perform their debut self-titled album to huge success which drew support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Radio 6’s Lauren Laverne.
Their set was mainly focused on their latest album Melt but the crowd were incredibly receptive and lead singer Oli encouraged the lively atmosphere with his constant engagement. ‘Shadowboxing’ was a favourite with its silky piano sequence that honed an element of delicacy and raw emotion. The set combined expansive melodies with background synths – ‘Open Ended’ was a fine example of those two merging.
As their hour and half set drew to a close the guys thanked the crowd and headed off the boat, leaving no gap to allow demands for an encore and instantly return to the stage with ‘Mystery’, a favourite from the debut album. The crowd went crazy for this track, electronic pop at its best with its magical ability to make you move your feet. I was beaming with happiness to this song. Following was ‘Underbelly’ which was a definitely crowd pleaser.
I support this project in more ways than one; as an indie girl at heart it is refreshing to see artists now embracing technology and being producers as well as just performers. Boxed In embody both indie and electronica, creating a sound which leaves you unable to stop dancing and lyrics that take you to a place of serenity and beauty. They did the impossible by improving from the last album that they can only keep progressing, keep producing innovative sound and keep putting on amazing live sets. You’d be silly not to join them on their journey.
